Sign-based geometry and anti-narrative structure
Achille Perilli draws on the sequential structure of comics to radically deconstruct their narrative content. The space is organized into compartments that evoke panels, yet any figurative reference is eliminated in favor of a purely sign-based and geometric construction.
The line is rapid and nervous, typical of the mid-1960s, a period in which the artist deepens his research into so-called “impossible geometries.” Forms appear to expand beyond the boundaries of the composition, generating a continuous tension between order and instability, between rational control and imagination.
This work testifies to a central phase in Perilli’s research, in which the grammar of the sign fully emancipates itself, and abstract language opens toward a playful and mental dimension.
