From drawing to project: image and space in Land Art
“Study for badly tuned cow” (1988) by Dennis Oppenheim is a study for a Land Art project, in which drawing assumes both a conceptual and projectual function. The work highlights the transition from idea to realization, representing a key moment in the artist’s creative process.
Executed in mixed media on paper, the composition combines graphic and painterly elements that define a complex visual structure. The dynamic and layered mark constructs an image that anticipates intervention in real space.
The work is part of Oppenheim’s investigation into the relationship between sculpture, environment, and perception, where the artwork is conceived not only as an object but as a process. The study reflects the artist’s interest in integrating visual, kinetic, and sound elements within the practice of Land Art.
