Matter and measure in the construction of color
“Grammature di colore” (1976) represents a central moment in Elio Marchegiani’s research, within the cycle of the same name in which the artist explores the relationship between painting, matter, and form. In this phase, the surface becomes a structured space defined by a balance between conceptual rigor and the physical presence of the material.
Executed in plaster and mixed media, the work is articulated into distinct chromatic areas conceived as “grammature”, organizing the surface according to a measurable and perceptual logic. The pictorial matter acquires a tactile dimension, transforming color into a constructive element.
The work belongs to a reflection on the relationship between quantity, surface, and perception, where color is not only visual but also a concrete presence. The piece expresses a synthesis between order and material sensitivity, a defining element of Marchegiani’s practice.
