Description of the Work: "House in mountain landscape, 2015"
Rob Scholte: The Revenge of Anonymous Embroidery
"House in Mountain Landscape," completed by Rob Scholte in 2015, is a conceptual and visually arresting work, a tapestry on canvas (a canvas-mounted embroidery) measuring $48 x 54 cm. It is part of the pivotal Embroidery cycle, a project that Scholte began in 2005 upon his return to the Netherlands.
The work is based on a provocative artistic practice: the artist meticulously selects and collects anonymous and discarded traditional embroideries, aiming to counter the tendency to favor mass production. Scholte himself criticizes the casual dismissal of the hours of dedication and patience invested in these "handmade" embroideries.
To elevate textile art and celebrate its silent creators, Scholte adopts a radical strategy: she exposes the back of the tapestry. This choice not only highlights the often rougher, more complex, and "honest" finish of the back, but also transforms a simple artisanal object into a recognized conceptual work. The work, signed and dated on the back by Scholte, thus acquires value and prestige in the contemporary art world.
"House in Mountain Landscape, 2015" boasts an impressive exhibition history, having been featured in the 2016 "Embroidery Show" exhibition at the Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle. It comes from Paolo Ruoti's private collection and is fully registered in the Rob Scholte Archive, accompanied by a photographic certificate.
