When Hunting Becomes Conceptual: Scholte and the Homage to Jan Wyck
"Landschap met hertenjacht after Jan Wyck"it's an imposingcanvas tapestrymade byRob ScholteIn the2006, measuring $52 \text{ x } 110 \text{ cm}$. This work, an integral part of the cycleEmbroidery, presents a conceptual reworking of a hunting scene, originally attributed to the Dutch master Jan Wyck.
Through this project, Scholte transforms the traditionalhand-made embroidery, often downgraded to mere decoration, into a vehicle for social criticism and artistic reflection. The artist opposes the devaluation of works that are thefruit of "dedication and patience", and redeems them by elevating them to contemporary works of art. The act of signing the piece, dated on the back, does not aim to obscure the anonymous author of the embroidery, but to give a formal value and historical recognition to the intense workmanship.
With his characteristic conceptual move, Scholte exposes theback (back)of the tapestry. Instead of a smooth finish, the viewer is invited to contemplate the rough, intricate tangle of threads on the back, a tangible sign of creative effort.
