Description of the Work: “Untitled, 1965” by Achille Perilli

Achille Perilli and the “Fumetti” Cycle

In this work from 1965, Achille Perilli draws on the sequential structure of comics in order to radically dismantle their narrative content. The space is organized into compartments reminiscent of comic panels, yet any figurative reference is deliberately removed in favor of a purely sign-based and geometric construction.

The line is rapid and nervous, characteristic of the mid-1960s, a period in which Perilli intensifies his investigation into so-called “impossible geometries.” Forms appear to expand beyond the edges of the composition, generating a constant tension between order and instability, between rational control and visionary imagination.

This work marks a fundamental moment in the artist’s research, in which the grammar of the sign becomes autonomous and abstract language acquires a playful and mental dimension. The Fumetti cycle represents one of the most original and recognizable phases of Perilli’s production, contributing decisively to his international recognition.
