Description of the Work: “Dumb Jock Disaster (for Brian), 2002” by Donald Baechler
Donald Baechler: Everyday Iconography and Graphic Synthesis
Created in 2002, Dumb Jock Disaster (for Brian) belongs to the mature phase of Donald Baechler’s production, in which the image is reduced to an essential sign and charged with symbolic value.
The composition is structured around the figure of a suitcase outlined with a bold black line on a textured surface achieved through painterly stratifications and textile collage elements. Isolated and frontal, the object loses its descriptive function to assume an archetypal dimension, evoking themes of travel, memory and identity.
The dedication “for Brian” introduces a personal component, referring to Brian Belott, a figure connected to the artist through a relationship of creative proximity.
The work, signed, dated and titled on the reverse, comes from the Brian Belott Collection and was exhibited at Rove Gallery, London, in the exhibition Friends & Family in 2012.
