Surface, light, and reflective matter

“La tavola d’oro” (1960) represents an early and crucial moment in Elio Marchegiani’s research, in which the surface becomes the primary field of investigation. The work reflects an interest in the relationship between matter and light, developed through an essential yet highly perceptual construction.

Executed in mixed media on panel, the composition is dominated by the use of gold, employed as a reflective element capable of activating the pictorial surface. Light is not depicted but generated directly by the material, creating a shifting and unstable perception.

The work belongs to an experimental phase that anticipates the artist’s later developments, particularly his exploration of material and chromatic quantity that would define the “Grammature di Colore”.
