Traditional geometry and pattern construction
“Ndebele Pattern” (2017) by Esther Mahlangu belongs to the artist’s practice, based on the translation of traditional Ndebele painting into a contemporary context. In this work, the decorative language becomes an autonomous visual structure.
Executed in acrylic on canvas, the work develops a circular composition in which geometric forms and chromatic fields are organized according to a rigorous system. Black lines define the contours, while intense colors create a balance between rhythm and symmetry.
The work reflects a continuity between tradition and contemporaneity, in which the ornamental motif is transformed into pictorial language. The surface functions as a space of visual order while maintaining a strong connection to Ndebele culture.
