Craft and conceptual device
“House in mountain landscape” (2015) by Rob Scholte belongs to the “Embroidery” cycle, in which the artist develops a reflection on the value of manual labor and its reinterpretation within a contemporary context. The work transforms a craft object into a conceptual device.
Executed as a tapestry on canvas, the composition originates from a traditional embroidery recontextualized through the artist’s intervention. The decision to display the reverse side alters the perception of the image, bringing the structure and process to the forefront.
The work reflects a tension between anonymity and authorship, in which the original gesture is redefined within the artistic framework. The surface functions as a space of visual inversion, transforming the decorative dimension into critical reflection.
