Historical reinterpretation and conceptual device
“Landschap met hertenjacht after Jan Wyck” (2006) by Rob Scholte belongs to the “Embroidery” cycle, in which the artist reworks images from painting tradition through the medium of embroidery. The work develops a reflection on the relationship between art history, reproduction, and the value of manual labor.
Executed as a mounted tapestry, the composition originates from a traditional embroidery reinterpreted within a conceptual framework. The hunting scene, related to the work of Jan Wyck, is translated into a contemporary context where the meaning of the image is linked to its process of execution.
The decision to display the reverse side introduces a perceptual inversion that highlights the material structure and underlying labor. The work functions as a space of dialogue between anonymity and authorship, transforming a decorative object into a critical device.
