Description of the Work: "Untitled (Hoarfrost), 1974" by Robert Rauschenberg

Robert Rauschenberg: Hoarfrost, The Veil of Memory over Information

"Untitled (Hoarfrost)" is a landmark work by Robert Rauschenberg, created in 1974, and is a prime example of the Hoarfrost series (1974–76). The work was created using solvent transfer and collage on unstretched fabric and measures 180 x 91 cm.

This series was born from the observation of how the gauze used in the lithography laboratory retained traces of ink. Rauschenberg applied images from newspapers and magazines (including local sources like the Miami News) to layers of fabric using a solvent and pressure. The result is layers of gauzy fabric in muted tones that simultaneously veil the transferred images.

In this particular work, Rauschenberg juxtaposed familiar, everyday subjects to obscure their clear logic and reveal their pure materiality. The subject, in particular, depicts the explosion of a nuclear bomb, combined with cutouts of environmental concerns such as drought and desert, highlighting the artist's critical commentary on society and the media. The artist's skillful use of fabric makes the work both a dynamic, almost sculptural form and a medium for the transference of images.

The work boasts prestigious provenance, including the Ace Gallery in Los Angeles, the Galleria Gian Enzo Sperone, and the MADRE Museum in Naples. It was exhibited in the exhibition "The Go-Between" (2014–2015) at the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples and is published in the exhibition catalogue. Its authenticity is guaranteed by a registration with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation (RRF 74.028).
